What is a Nanometer?

A nanometer (nm) is one billionth of a meter or 10^-9 meter.  Nanoscale particles are so small that they cannot be seen with the naked eye or even a light microscope! 

Imagine trying to manipulate matter that is only 1 to 100 nanometers in length. Very specialized tools are required to reveal the character of objects at the nanoscale.
